Garage floor with a full flake epoxy finish and clear topcoat

What is a full flake epoxy floor?

A full flake floor goes down in three layers. First, a base coat. Then decorative flake, thrown into the wet base coat until the floor will not take any more. Then a clear polyaspartic coat that locks the flake in. Every 350 sq ft gets a 40 lb box of flake, so the floor is covered edge to edge.

The flake does three jobs. It hides dust and small flaws in the slab. It adds texture underfoot. It adds thickness, so the floor takes more wear than a solid color coat.

Garage, basement or shop: what to plan for

Garage

  • Coat when the slab and the air are between 60 and 90°F and humidity is under 85%.
  • Before you order, tape a 2 ft square of plastic sheet to the slab and leave it for 24 hours. Damp concrete under the plastic means the slab needs moisture vapor primer first.
  • The Garage Pro and One-Day kits finish with a UV-stable clear coat.

Basement

  • Slabs below ground fail the moisture test more often than garage slabs. Do the plastic sheet test before you order.
  • A floor coating does not stop leaks. If water comes in through the walls or the slab after rain, fix that first.
  • The basement kit is sized by square feet. Measure the room, length times width.

Shop and commercial

  • The Commercial Pro kit covers up to 2,000 or 5,000 sq ft. Above that, call for a quote and drum pricing.
  • Fill saw-cut and expansion joints with flexible joint sealant before you coat.
  • Add anti-slip grit on ramps and wet areas.

Outdoor concrete, tile and wood

Prep decides how a full flake floor turns out

  1. Test for moisture. Use the plastic sheet test above.
  2. Repair the slab. Fill cracks with epoxy crack filler. Rebuild chipped spots with concrete quick fix.
  3. Deal with oil. Degrease the stains. If a stain comes back a day later, prime it with oil stop primer.
  4. Profile the concrete. Grind or acid-etch until it feels like 120-grit sandpaper. Coatings bond to a rough surface.

Full flake epoxy floor FAQ

Is a full flake floor slippery?

The flake gives the surface texture. For ramps, steps and floors that get wet, stir anti-slip grit into the clear coat. More in are epoxy floors slippery?

How long does the job take?

Two days with the epoxy kits. Day one is the base coat and the flake. Day two you scrape and vacuum the loose flake, then roll the clear coat. The One-Day kit does all of it in one day.

Can I do it myself?

Yes. Bring a helper, so one person rolls while the other throws flake. Every order includes a free 20-minute call to go through your floor before you start.

How much flake do I get?

One 40 lb box for about every 350 sq ft. That is a full broadcast: you throw flake until the wet coat is covered.

How do I clean it?

Sweep or dust mop. Mop with water and a mild cleaner.

How does it compare to a big-box kit?
