Can You Epoxy Over Wood or Plywood?
Yes. A wood or plywood subfloor can be coated if the wood is sound. Wood moves more than concrete, so the system uses a primer made for wood and a flexible base coat.
The epoxy system for a wood floor
| Coat | Product | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Primer | P-015 Water Based Epoxy Primer | 270 sq ft per gallon |
| Base coat | B-933 Fast Cure Polyurea Base Coat. Flexible. | 80 to 100 sq ft per gallon |
| Topcoat | T-444X Polyaspartic. Clear and UV-stable. | 120 to 200 sq ft per gallon |
All three ship to all 50 states.
Prep for wood and plywood
- Sand or grind the floor. The coating needs a fresh wood surface to bond to.
- Do not coat plywood that is rotting or breaking down. Replace it first.
- Wood soaked with harsh chemicals or animal fat cannot be coated.
Timing
- Day 1. Prep and roll the primer. It needs 7 to 10 hours before the next coat.
- Day 2. Roll the base coat. Topcoat it 3 to 6 hours later.
- Day 3. Walk on it 24 hours after the topcoat. Full cure takes 2 to 7 days.
Coat when the room is between 55 and 90°F.
What it costs
A 200 sq ft room takes one 1 gal kit of P-015 ($79.99), one 2.5 gal kit of B-933 ($209.99) and one 2 gal kit of T-444X ($309.99). That is $599.97, or about $3.00 per sq ft.
