How much epoxy do I need for my floor?
Plan on one 3 gal kit of high build epoxy for every 350 sq ft of floor. That works out to about 115 sq ft per gallon at 14 mils thick. A full flake floor also takes a 40 lb box of flake and 2 gal of clear coat for every 350 sq ft.
| Floor size | Epoxy base coat | Flake, full broadcast | Clear coat over flake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 350 sq ft (1-car) | 3 gal | 40 lb | 2 gal |
| Up to 700 sq ft (2-car) | 6 gal | 80 lb | 4 gal |
| Up to 1,050 sq ft (3-car) | 9 gal | 120 lb | 6 gal |
| Up to 1,400 sq ft (4-car) | 12 gal | 160 lb | 8 gal |
| Up to 1,750 sq ft | 15 gal | 200 lb | 10 gal |
| Up to 2,100 sq ft | 18 gal | 240 lb | 12 gal |
These are the amounts packed in the Garage Pro and Basement & Indoor Pro full flake kits. Tools are in the box too.
Epoxy flake calculator: how much flake to buy
A full broadcast takes about 40 lb of flake for every 350 sq ft. You throw flake into the wet base coat until the floor will not take any more. A light accent takes 1 to 5 lb for the same area.
Decorative flake comes in 1, 5 and 10 lb bags and a 40 lb box. See all ten blends on the epoxy floor colors page.
How much topcoat and primer
| Product | Covers, per gallon |
|---|---|
| Water-based polyurethane topcoat | 320 to 500 sq ft |
| Polyaspartic clear coat | 133 to 320 sq ft |
| Clear epoxy for metallic floors | 90 to 100 sq ft |
| Moisture vapor primer | About 94 sq ft, in one thick coat |
| Oil stop primer | 200 to 320 sq ft |
| Epoxy crack filler | About 1,228 ft of crack, 1/8 inch wide and deep |
The Pro kits already include the right amount of topcoat for their size. The Starter kit has no topcoat. Primer and crack filler are extra. Buy them only if the floor needs them.
What changes the number
- Rough or porous concrete uses more coating. If your floor is at the top of a size, order the next size up.
- Coverage assumes the recommended thickness on concrete that has been ground or etched. See grinding vs acid etching.
- Measure length times width in feet. A 22 by 30 ft floor is 660 sq ft, so it takes the kit for up to 700 sq ft.
